From rags to riches. If Atletico de Kolkata’s ISL campaign this season had to be expressed with a single sentence, that would probably be it. After a string of losses a place in the semifinals was looking overtly optimistic for ATK but tonight’s huge win puts them back on top of the table. Prior to the match, Goa FC coach Zico was more than unhappy as his team did not get a chance to practice on field. With the emotions running high, the match promised to be a battle but it turned out to be a grossly one sided affair.
The home team capitalized on every opportunity right from the word go with their South African import Sameehg Doutie finding the net at the 20th minute. Captain Borja Fernández increased the lead two minutes later with a firm shot beating Goa FC goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani.
Two goals down, Goa slowed the pace of the game and enjoyed a period of possession and created a couple of half chances that failed to find the net. After the break, ATK pressed for goal again and on the 68th minute Doutie was tripped in the box by Nicolau Colaco. Ian Hume did not fail to convert the spot kick. Doutie scored his second and team’s fourth goal at the 77th minute to add insult to the injury.
With the 3 points from today, ATK moves to the top of the table. Goa FC is at close second with one less match played. More than the win, ATK coach must have been a relieved to see ATK defenders manage to keep a clean slate.
