Free Syrian Army or FSA reportedly brought down a Russian Mi-8 helicopter. A video was released on an YouTube channel operated by 1st Coastal Brigade of FSA. Russia had sent 2 Mi-8 helicopters on a search and rescue mission to find the pilots of the SU-24 jet that was shot down earlier today by Turkish military. According to a report by Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the helicopter was struck by a BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile.
FSA is a rebel brigade in Syria opposing the Assad governance. It is supported by the US in its fight to bring down President Assad’s regime and the ISIL. The BGM-71 TOW missiles were supplied to the rebels by US. The video shows the helicopter going down after an initial hit and then blown up by a direct hit. The pilot flying the helicopter is reported dead.
This news come on the back of the Russian fighter jet shot down by Turkey. NATO is trying to gauge the situation while Russia claims serious consequences are on the way.
