In their home game today against Mumbai FC, Chennaiyin posted a clinical performance destroying their opponents 3 – 0 in the process. Chennaiyin took early lead when Stiven Mendoza scored on the 9th minute. Jeje Lalpekhlua’s goal on the 17th minute was a stroke of luck as Thoi Singh’s direct shot to goalkeeper Subrata Paul got stuck in a puddle of water. Jeje followed through and finished past the goalkeeper. Just before the close of first half, Bernard Mendy increased the lead to 3 – 0.
After the break Mumbai came out hard searching for goals. Sonny Norde fed a good ball to Selim Benachour and tested goalkeeper Apoula Edel a couple of times but the goalkeeper averted the danger each time. Towards the close of play Mumbai’s Sunil Chhetri’s shot hit the post.
With this win Channaiyin move to 19 points off 13 matches followed closely by North East United. As the fourth spot on the semifinals list is still open, NEU and Pune FC’s match tomorrow will be of high importance. Mumbai keep languishing at the bottom of the table with 13 points.
