It was crucial game for both teams as ATK wanted to gain a lead before going into home advantage and Chennaiyin wanted something to salvage without 2 of their best players and playing on a neutral venue. But in the end, Chennaiyin FC showed a lot more intent on the field as they comfortably ousted a hapless ATK side 3 goals to none.
The match started with Chennaiyin creating a few chances and coming close but till 39th minute none of the teams could find the goal until Bruno Pelissari’s 39th minute free kick from 36 yards. The shot sent goalkeeper Amrinder first to the left and then swung right to find the back of the net. But the telling blow for ATK was the injury of their defensive midfielder Borja Fernandes who was replaced on the 41st minute.
ATK looked distraught since the beginning of second half. Stiven Mendoza and Jeje combined beautifully up front as every clearance from the Chennaiyin defence seemed to turn into a scoring opportunity at the ATK defence. Jeje scored ont eh 56th minute and Mendoza on the 69th minute scored two convincing goals from such clearances and massive defensive errors from the ATK defenders.
Now ATK has an uphill battle ahead of them as they must win by at lease 3 – 0 in Kolkata to take the clash into extra time. If Chennaiyin FC manages to score then ATK would go out even after taking a 3 goal lead based on away goal count. It is time to see what ATK coach Jose Antonio Habas has up his sleeves for the 2nd leg.
