The deadlock was broken on the 24th minute as Indian captain Sunil Chhetri headed home a fantastic cross. Just 8 minutes later, India increased lead to 2 – 0 as Jeje Lalpekhlua got a beautiful cross from Hali Charan and made no mistake from within the penalty box. Just when it seemed India would steal the show, Maldives hit back with a goal from Nashid Ahmed on the first minute of injury time to end the first half 2 – 1.

In the second half, the boys in blue looked threatening again as the barged attack after attack on the Maldives defence. On the 61st meeting, Hali Charan created another chance for Jeje but the shot was wide. Jeje made amends for his mistake just 4 minutes later as headed in his second and India’s third goal of the night.
