Indian Football Team end their 2015 campaign in perfect style as they defeated Maldives by 3 goals to 2 at Trivandrum today on 31st December. It was an early kick off as the game started at 3:30 PM IST. India started all guns blazing creating a number of early chances but Maldives defence and goalkeeper stood firm to deny any early inroads.
The deadlock was broken on the 24th minute as Indian captain Sunil Chhetri headed home a fantastic cross. Just 8 minutes later, India increased lead to 2 – 0 as Jeje Lalpekhlua got a beautiful cross from Hali Charan and made no mistake from within the penalty box. Just when it seemed India would steal the show, Maldives hit back with a goal from Nashid Ahmed on the first minute of injury time to end the first half 2 – 1.
In the second half, the boys in blue looked threatening again as the barged attack after attack on the Maldives defence. On the 61st meeting, Hali Charan created another chance for Jeje but the shot was wide. Jeje made amends for his mistake just 4 minutes later as headed in his second and India’s third goal of the night.
There was more drama left as Maldives crawled back into the match with a headed goal by Ali Amdhan on the 75th minute. But Indian defence held on rigidly for the remaining 15 minutes and ensured a final birth for India in this edition of SAFF Suzuki Cup. India will meet the winners of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan into the finals.
