After a decade of dwindling number of girls against boys, the sex ratio of Haryana shows an average 905 girls per 1000 boys according the statistic of December, 2015. In a press conference, Chief Minister of Haryna Manohar Lal Khattar attributed the success to Indian government’s ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign and also multiple strategies Haryna government itself took.
One of the strategies adopted by Haryana is to award t lakh INR to anyone who provides information about illegal pre-natal sex determination and abortion. According to Haryana Health Minsiter Anil Vij, 17 such informants have already been awarded. Sirsa district currently leads the pack with a ratio of 999 girls per 1000 boys.
Government has set the target of 950 girls per 1000 boys for the state in the next 12 months. Apart from Sirsa, Panchkula, Karnal and Fatehabad have also shown good progress by registering 961, 959 and 952 girls per 1000 boys. Hisar district is at the end of the list with only 906 girls per 1000 but that number is likely to increase in the coming months.
