In the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament, Indian singles shuttlers enjoyed a very successful day as PV Sindhu, Ajay Jayaram and Kidambi Srikanth won their second round matches to wnter the quarter-final. Plying at the Penang stadium, 2013 winner of the tournament PV Sindhu subdued the tough challenge from Japanese Kaori Imabeppu 21-13, 13-21, 21-14. Srikanth who is the 2nd seed in the tournament had a relatively easy outing as he bested Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana 21-17, 21-10. Jayaram had to overcame steep challenge from Malaysian Zulfaldi Zulkiffli to reach the quarter-finals by 11-21, 21-8, 22-20.
Sindhu will meet Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri in the semifinal over whom she has a 7-2 win loss record. Srikanth will face China’s Huang Yuxiang and Ajay will have the toughest draw facing teo time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei of China. The day was not productive for India’s doubles specialists Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa as the duo lost to Japan’s Shizuka Matsuo-Mami Naito 14-21, 17-21.
