Sania Mirza – Martina Hingis Win Australian Open 2016 Women’s Doubles

In a perfect crescendo to their rocking 2015 and fantastic 2016 performance, ‘Santina’ clinched the Australian Open 2016 women’s doubles title to make it 36 unbeaten matches and their 3rd grand slam win in a row. Sania and Martina have now won 8 consecutive tournaments and are looking good for plenty more. Playing against 7th seed Czech team of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, a straight set win of 7-6, 6-3 was commensurate with the tennis the Indo-Swiss duo has been playing.

The first set was hard fought as Hlavackova produced some great baseline strokes and Hradecka secured the nets. The top seed, however, had enough experience and skill in their repertoire to counter each break with a break and finally win the tie breaker to bag the first set. That seemed to deflate the Czech team’s morale as they could break only once but Sania and Martina broke two games to make the game at 6-3. After the win Sania said, “I would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us. For me Australian Open is special, it’s like home. I have special memories here. We had an incredible one year. Martina is an amazing champion and an amazing person, so it is a privilege for me to play with her.” Martina had a word of praise for the opponents, “They pushed us to the limit. It was s tough tournament. We will try to defend our title next year.”
