German world number 4 Angelique Kerber caused the upset of the year so far as she subdued an unstoppable Serena Williams 6 – 43, 3 – 6, 6 – 4 to clinch her maiden Grand Slam trophy.Playing against all odds, Kerber showed great composure, power and planning as she literally toyed with the world number 1 at some stages. Serena’s lackluster form on the day that mattered did not help the American either.

Playing for a record equaling 22 grand slams, Serena was the favorite from the start but breaking Serena and claiming the first set, Kerber announced that she would not go down easily. Serena managed to turn the tides around as she broke Kerber twice to claim the second set 6 – 3. It all rested on the 3rd and last set and Kerber took a 5 – 2 lead and looked set to win the match. But Serena had some sting in the tail as she held her serve and broke Kerber’s to make it 5 – 4. But Kerber broke again to make it the first Grand SLam win for a German sicne Stefi Graf.
