In a large patent case that was going back and forth since 2012 against VirnetX, Apple had to face a major setback as a East Texas District Court jury ordered Apple to pay ^26 million USD for damages. the case was for 4 of Apple’s real-time communication apps including FaceTime and iMessage.
VirnetX mainly makes its money from holding patents and it bought the patents under debate from another company called Science Applications International Corporation. VirnetX licenses their 80 patents and it had an out of the court settlement for 200 USD with Microsoft back in 2010.
Apple had previously lost in East Texas District Court and was ordered to pay 368 million USD in 2012 but they won the retrial. Then the case went into retrial resulting in the new verdict. Predictably VirnetX shares skyrocketed following the verdict.
