Uttar Pradesh government announced a 50,000 INR per month pension for Yash Bharti Award winners, an award given for extraordinary performance in sports, fine arts, folk music, classical music and literature. The last date for pension application was 31st January and more than 100 applications have been submitted. Applicants include Bollywod stars Raj Babbar, Jimmy Shergill, singers Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Kailash Kher, Shubha Mudgal and crikceters, Mohammad kaif and Suresh Raina.
Actor Amitabh Bachchan refused the application but many accepted. This has sparked a controversy that why rich and established individuals such as Raj Babbar, Suresh Raina and Kailash Kher have applied for the pension when they clearly have no use for the paltry sum. Responding to this question, Kailash Kher said, “The phrase ‘kabhi arsh par toh kabhi farsh par’ (sometimes in the sky and sometimes on the ground) is what defines artistes like us. This money will do lot of good to those who need it badly because in our field, there is a lot of uncertainty.”
