Indian Wrestlers Steal The Show At South Asian Games 2016 With 14 Golds

Since the rise of Sushil Kumar in the world rankings, Indian wrestlers have been spearheading the athletics department in all major events. A silver and a bronze at the London Olympics won by Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt further cemented the trend. Now at the 2016 edition of South Asian Games, Indian wrestlers proved their mettle again by grabbing 14 out of the 16 possible gold medals and 2 silvers, their best showing at the SAG events by far.

Despite fielding the second best line up, Indian wrestlers proved to be a handful for their south Asian counterparts. Apart from Mandeep in the 125 Kg Men group and G0pal Yadav in the 86 Kg Men group, all grappler from India tasted gold. Mandeep bowed out to Pakistani wrestler Zamam Anwar and Gopal lost to Pakistani wrestler Mohammed Imam and settled for silvers. India would be proud that all of the female wrestlers including Nikki, Shilpi, Rajini, Manisha and Priyanka won gold medals in their respective weight groups.

This has been a great outing for India in this edition of South Asian Games are they are leading the medal tally with 53 gold, 20 silver and 4 bronze medals. Sri Lanka is trailing India by 16 medals but they have only 11 gold medals. Pakistan occupies the 3rd place with 29 overall medals. Apart from Wrestling, India’s biggest medal contributor has been swimming with total 25 medals.
