Keeping up with the name-changing tradition of TMC government, the 150 meter stretch of road known as Bishop Lefroy Road in Kolkata will now be known as Satyajit Ray Sarani. The legendary filmmaker’s house stands on this very road which brought about the name change. Although some of the name changes in recent times in Kolkata resulted in criticism, this name change has been welcomed by all concerned.
Sayajit Ray’s house is already a grade I heritage building. Keeping up with the change, the road has been beautified by adding special benchs, street furniture and copy of original posters of some of Ray’s iconic films on both sides of the road. After inaugurating the new road, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote on FaceBook, “As a token of our humble dedication to the memory and phenomenal contribution of legendary personality Satyajit Ray, we have decided to rename Lee Road, near Bishop Lefroy Road where his house stands, as Satyajit Ray Sarani.”
