Under pressure Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to install 50 ‘Zero Base’ mobile towers as part of a pilot project. The zero base towers are multi functional as they can work as light emission towers, wi-fi hotspot, camera tower and regular mobile tower. The radio units and cables will be placed beneath the ground or inside poles. Each tower would cost between 8 to 10 lakh INR.
According to BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava, the current mobile towers in use in India lack in aesthetics and hinder the beauty of skylines. The zero base towers would merge the need for multiple towers into one and would improve on aesthetics and shared communication.
“We will ask for quotes from all these players for zero base towers…initially we will begin with 50 towers to demonstrate that how communication can be delivered with good aesthetics and good looking features,” said Anupam Shrivastava. According to him, the functionalities of these towers will be shared among all players which would bring down the cost.
