In the ongoing assembly elections, Assam has registered highest ever polling numbers in the state’s electoral history. Even the experts are baffled by the huge turnaround. As mach as 82% people showed up at the voting booths. Assam’s chief electoral officer Vijayendra said final reports could show up to 85% polling.
Huge polling numbers often signal an upset or a regime change but for the time being both BJP and Congress are happy to see people exercising there electoral rights. Urban areas recorded 80% polling which is up by 15% from the last assembly elections. The people in Muslim belt of lower and central Assam also voted in prodigious numbers. Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi said, “This is proof of people’s growing faith in politicians.”
