Despite not making the Olympics cut directly, M C Mary Kom might still be competing in the Olympics if India’s plea of wildcard entry goes through. The 5 time world champion and one time Olympics bronze medal winning boxer does make a strong case but hers will be one of the many applications AIBA receives. Earlier in the month, Mary Kom could not advance past the second round at World Championships in Kazakhstan. A place in the semi final would have guaranteed an Olympics birth for this 33 old boxer.
Mary Kom has not been in good touch off late as she missed her chance in both the qualifying events this year. Not only did she lose, she could not get past the preliminary rounds. It is not clear whether her age is a factor in her slowing down a bit. One wildcard per weight category is allowed at the Olympics. If Mary Kom qualifies for Rio, she will have her task cut out against the world’s best boxers.
