National Green Tribunal has ordered Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living foundation to cough up 4.75 crore INR in fines by tomorrow. The fine is in lieu of the “World Culture Festival” held on the banks of Yamuna river in March. The festival was allowed to be held only under the condition that the foundation will pay 5 crore INR for any damage done to the river’s ecosystem. Art of Living foundation paid 25 lakhs up front and were supposed to pay the balance later.
The foundation had plead to pay the balance via bank guarantee instead of wire transfer. But the Green Tribunal has ordered to pay the remaining amount to DDA (Delhi Development Authority) by tomorrow. The panel commented that failure to pay the remaining amount till now is “wilful violation” and the court will lift the “corporate veil” if needed in this matter. Green Tribunal has also sought a complete report of the festival site by 10th July.
