Before the Copa America first round match of Uruguay and Mexico, the national anthem of Chile was mistakenly played for Uruguay. The match took place at the University of Phoenix stadium and footages showed that Uruguay players just stood awkwardly without knowing what to do. Some of them shifted uneasily where they stood, some were seen mouthing the actual national anthem. Even the fans were confused about how to react.
The players however stood graciously till the anthem finished. Incidentally the Uruguayan national anthem is the longest national anthem in the world and after the fiasco the commentator mentioned perhaps it was the shortened version of the anthem. Copa America has already released a statement citing human error and said, “We sincerely apologize to the Uruguayan Federation, the Uruguay National Team, to the people of Uruguay and to the fans for this mistake.”
