Aida Gemanque, nicknamed grandma Iaia officially became the oldest Olympic torchbearer in the history of the game when she carried the torch in the city of Macapa. Aida broke the record of 101 year old Alexander Kaptarenko who was a torchbearer at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. Aida is one of the 12,000 runners who will carry the Olympic torch across 325 Brazilian cities to the Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on 5th August.
Aida is already a part of the Guiness Book of World Records when she skydived at the age of 103 earning her the nickname extreme granny. After lighting the cauldron in Macapa, Aida said, “I am overjoyed. I have to be grateful for this joy, which I never expected in my life. I am immensely proud,”
