The new Corning Gorilla Glass, called the “Gorilla Glass 5”, could take away the bane of most smartphone users, accidentally dropping their phones and ending up with smashed or scratched glasses. 70% of all smartphones and tablets worldwide used Gorilla Glass and Corning has now stepped up the game.
The new Gorilla Glass can withstand drops from 5 feet or 1.6 meters at a force and still stay pristine. The new glass has 80% less chances of cracking. In their labs, the glass with rested with forced drops from 5 feet high on sandstone papers. The glass resisted both smashing and scratching. You can see the testing in practice in the video below:
You can expect new devices with Gorilla Glass 5 within a few months. Corning however warns that the design of devices can play a significant role on the integrity of the screen and certain materials and designs can weaken the glass. But it still should be much tougher than what is in the market at the moment.
