Egypt’s government broadcast service, the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, has suspended 8 female anchors for not being in appropriate shape. They have been instructed lose the extra weight within only one month. This order has drawn massive flak on social media. Women’s rights advocate The Women’s Centre for Guidance and Legal Awareness has labelled this move as a violence against women.
Ironically, the move has also gained some support within the Egyptian broadcast and television community. In the newspaper Al-Ahram, reporter Alaa el-Sadani said she was sickened by the repulsive and disgusting appearance of the anchors. Another journalist Fatma al-Sharawi said she thinks this guidance should be expanded to local TV channels as well.
