World’s first face transplant patient, Isabelle Dinoire of France, has died in April this year. The news was not made public to protect the privacy of her family. She received the transplant at the age of 38 in 2005. Unfortunately the transplant slowly created complications for her and her body rejected the transplant as well. She died after prolonged illness.

Isabelle was set up for a transplant after her dog had mauled her leaving her nose, lips and chin disfigured. She received the transplant in 2005 from a brain dead patient. She also appeared on TV following the transplant and seemed reasonably well. But the drugs she needed to take made her vulnerable to cancer and she developed two cancers. Isabelle also lost partial use of her transplanted lips. She said, “Since my operation I have a face, like everyone… I will be able to resume a normal life.”
