AIGF Appeals To Modi To Make Sports Betting Legal

News, Sports

All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) has sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make sports betting legal in India. The federation came into existence last November and it handles sporting and gaming events. It also provides suggestions to the government on regulation gambling activities involving sports. Betting on sports is legal in many countries.

In the letter, AIGF has brought up the point that apart from Cricket, almost all Indian sports are suffering from lack of funding. Exasperated by lacklustre performance in global arena, this sorry situation can be remedied by a steady influx of funding which can be generated legally through sports betting.

Black money amounting to crores exchange hands each year through illegal betting. Government does not have the infrastructure or manpower to curtail these activities. By the time a betting ring is busted, an obscene amount of money is siphoned away. Making sports betting legal would allow government to regulate all such activity and deal a telling blow to illegal sports betting. It should be noted that even the Supreme Court of India accepted the recommendation of Lodha Committee which advocated for making sports betting legal. The matter now resides with the Parliament.
