Iraqi forces and Badr Organisation (Shia Militia helping the army) has reached the vicinity of Mosul, ISIS’s last remaining and largest stronghold in Iraq. Army was fighting around Mosul for two weeks to rid the surroundings of ISIS fighters. Now they have turned their eyes towards the main city. There are nearly 1.5 million citizens still in the city and the fight could take months.
Badr Organisation leader Hadi al-Amiri said, “The battle of Mosul will not be a picnic. We are prepared for the battle of Mosul even if it lasts for months.” The coalition is backed by US airstrikes. Iraqi army had earlier freed the cities of Ramadi and Falluja from the hands of ISIS. With the fall of Mosul, ISIS’s self-proclaimed caliphate will be eradicated from Iraq. ISIS has forced a large number civilians into Mosul to use them as human shields.
