Russia Set To Ban LinkedIn Over Personal Data Concerns
Global professional social networking giant LinkedIn could be soon be blocked in Russia. In fact according to Roskomnadzor, Russian communications watchdog, the ban could be in effect within just a few days. Russia has not banned any foreign internet companies before. This ban, if in effect, would be the first of its kind.
According to reports, the ban is due to LinkedIn’s failure to move personal databases to Russian soil. Russia has always been concerned about personal data of citizens and companies like Google, Uber and Ebay have already moved databases to Russia. Roskomnadzor has already got court orders to this effect.
LinkedIn said in a statement, “We have today again requested a meeting with Roskomnadzor to discuss their data localization request and we understand they are reviewing this proposal at the present time.” LinkedIn said that the ban would create problems for millions of Russian professionals who use LinkedIn and many companies as well.
