Shortly after the horrific crash of the LAMIA airlines flight and tragic death of 75 people including Chapecoense footballers, their opponents in the Copa Sudamericana final Atletico Nacional requested to hand the cup to the Brazilian side as posthumous homage. Atletico Nacional has requested CONMEBOL in this regard and are waiting for a decision. At this moment the chances of this final taking place sometime in the future is slim. Copa Sudamericana is the second most prestigious tournament in South America after Copa Libertadores.
The statement issued by Atletico Nacional requests, “that the Copa Sudamericana title be handed to Chapecoense Football Association as an honorary trophy for its great loss, and as a posthumous homage to the victims of the fatal accident that has put our sport in mourning.” Chapecoense had a meteoric rise in South American football as they were playing 4th division only 7 years ago. 7 Chapecoense footballers were not travelling on that place that had crashed. Only 6 of the 81 passengers survived the incident.
