With his injury time strike against Stoke City to tie the game, Wayne Rooney just became Manchester United’s highest goalscorer with 250 goals. Rooney Went past Sir Bobby Charlton’s record which stood for 44 years since his departure from the club in 1973. With this goal Rooney also went past Alan Shearer’s record of most goals away from home in EPL with 88 goals. Of all the 250 goals, this was just the 6th goal Wayne Rooney scored directly from a free kick.
Sir Bobby Charlton scored 249 goals for ManU in 758 appearances. Rooney took 546 appearances to break the record. He joined ManU from Everton in 2004. After this feat. Sir Bobby Charlton said, “I’d be lying to say I’m not disappointed to lose the record. However, I can honestly say I’m delighted for Wayne.” ManU coach Jose Mourinho said, “The record is the record. It is the record of the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in the world. Before him, the record belonged to a legend of English football. Now Wayne becomes a legend of Manchester United.”
Rooney was congratulated by Sir Bobby Charlton after the game and he said it was a huge honor for him in a tweet.
