In the impoverished town Rahachow in south east Belarus, local council has decided to step in to help locals by accepting recyclable materials as payment for utilities. Flyers were put up around the town that said citizens can pay bills for water, gas and other basic utilities by handing over plastic, paper, glass and other recyclables. People were not being able to pay utility bills on time which was a growing concern for the town.
Some citizens remain sceptical as no measurement has been mentioned in the flyer. Hence they are unsure as to how much recyclables they need to provide as bill payment. The town has also been plagued with poor water quality so the locals are demanding better water first and these innovative movements later. Some citizens however welcomed this move by the local council.
