A team of scientists have found a protein that can delay abnormal cell growth and cell death. The study was published in Journal Cell and could be extremely significant in treating neurodegeneration, cancer and other degenerative diseases. Diseases like cancer damages cells via a process called necroptosis. This set of proteins can slow down the entire process thus protecting cells.
These proteins have the potential to stop cancer spreading via blood vessels. They can also be used in the case of stroke or heart attack when certain cells are deprived of blood and start to die. Medical researchers are hopeful that this finding will help in combating degenerative diseases where brain cells are damaged.
