To commemorate 50th anniversary of world’s first ever ATM (automated teller machine), which was installed on 27th June way back in 1967, Barclays bank has decided to turn the ATM golden with a red carpet leading up to it. The ATM was the very first in the world, commissioned by Barclays bank and installed in Enfield. It still exists till this day along with all of the first few ATMs commissioned by Barclays.
Actor Reg Varney was the first person ever to withdraw money from an ATM. Nowadays there are ATMs everywhere around the world with one installed as far as the South Pole! Barclays Head of Customer Experience and Channels Raheel Ahmed said, “Even though recent years have seen a huge uptake of digital banking and card payments, cash remains a crucial part of most people’s day-to-day lives.” Barclays just celebrated the rich history of ATMs making people’s’ lives easier with this small little gesture.
