Ace Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga has been dropped from the squad ahead of the Pakistan ODIs. Sri Lanka cricket board cited the reason being resting the player but experts are able to read much more behind the decision. Once a fearsome pace bowler, Malinga has only been a shadow of his former self since his return to ODI cricket in June. In the 13 matches he played since then, he could manage only 10 wickets.
But the wicket tally is not of primary concern for the pacer. The fact that he has lost some of his fearsome pace, control and dominance over the batsmen in death overs must have pushed the selectors to make this decision. the pacer has given away runs at an economy rate of over 6 during the last 13 and he has picked up his wickets at an average of 62.30. He was not able to bring out those venomous bouncers and yorkers as a number of batsmen hit him all around the park. He was not able to give his side wickets at crucial moments in the match like he used to and ended up leaking too many runs.
Some might think that the writing on the wall is clear for the 34-year-old pacer. Pace bowlers usually have a shorter career than most other cricketers and Malinga has not been his best for quite some time now. Even in his last venture during the IPL the MI stalwart failed to make any significant mark although Mumbai Indians went on to with the IPL. It is time to see if Malinga has one last burst in his tank or if it is beginning of the end.
