The US Food and Drug Safety Administration (FDA) has given their approval to world’s first trackable pill. This pill is Abilify MyCite aripiprazole tablet, manufactured for patients with manic episodes and schizophrenia. The pill has a tiny sensor embedded that is ingestible and can send signals to a patch that the patient has to wear. The data then can be collected in the patient’s smartphone or sent to their physician. The pill has been created to find out if schizophrenic patients have taken their medication.
FDA said in a statement, “Being able to track ingestion of medications prescribed for mental illness may be useful for some patients. The FDA supports the development and use of new technology in prescription drugs and is committed to working with companies to understand how technology might benefit patients and prescribers.” The sensor is the size of a grain of sand and starts to work as soon as it comes in contact with stomach fluid. It can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours before the sensor starts working once the pill has been ingested.
