The state of California in the United States is all set to be the first state to mandate solar panels on all new homes. California Energy Commission is supposed to take the all-important decision next week during the new energy standards voting. The decision would be enforced from 2020. Technical Director for California Building Industry Association Bob Raymer said, “California is about to take a quantum leap in energy standards. No other state in the nation mandates solar, and we are about to take that leap.”
Once the mandates are in place, house prices in California are expected to rise. Currently, about 20% of all single-family owned homes have solar panels installed on them. The new decision would mean all new homes that are over three stories would have to be built along with solar panels. The ultimate goal behind this move is to increase the reliance on electricity over natural gas. The new mandate could add up to 30000 USD to the value of the home but over a 25-year lifespan, it would reduce costs up to 60000 USD.
