Khaleda Jia led BNP’s influential ministers Ali Ahsan Al Mujahid and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury have been hanged today at 12:55 AM at Dhaka Central Jail. Senior Jail Superintendent Mohammad Jahangir Kabir confirmed that both were hanged at the same time.

In 2013 a special international tribunal sentenced Salhauddin and Ali Ahsan to death on chrges of war crimes, murder, torture and rape during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Earlier this week, the Bangladesh Supreme Court upheld that decision. As a last ditch effort, they had appealed for Presidential Pardon but that was rejected as well.

When the defeat of Pakistani Army was confirmed in 1971, Ali Ahsan helped the Pakistani Army identify and kill a number of authors, doctors, artists and professors to accomplish a planned brain drain before the occupation of Bangladesh ended. Salhauddin Quader on the other hand orchestrated a torture and killing camp to rid Chittagong of non-Muslims. During the BNP ruling both held important positions in the Khaleda Jia ministry.
