ISL – NorthEast United FC Pip FC Pune City 3 – 2

Football, News, Sports

In a battle that meant a shot at the playoffs, NorthEast United FC proved to be the better side as they dislodged the campaign of their western India rivals FC Pune City for this edition of 2015. Both teams could have had a shot at the semifinal shot had they won. The match lived up to the raised expectations pretty well as NEU took the lead via Nicolas Velez after only 4 minutes of play. Not to be outdone, Pune City drew levels 4 minutes later via their Ivory Coast import Didier Zokoro. NEU increased the lead on 18th minute when Diomansy Kamara capitalized on a delightful cross from Velez and pushed the ball into open net.

Andre Bikey all but sealed it for NEU on the 43rd minute as he headed a free-kick into the goal as Pune goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya made a costly error in judgement. Pune tried to get back into the game but some robust defending from NEU kept Mutu and brigade at bay. On the 86th minute Adrian Mutu scored a delightful goal for Pune from a free-kick but it proved to be too little and too late.

Now NEU has to hope that NEU can defeat or hold a resurgent Chennaiyin FC if they are to go through to the semifinals. A win for Chennaiyin will mean curtains for NorthEast United FC for this edition of ISL.
