Bollywood and Indian film industry veteran actor Rekha Ganeshan has been chosen as the next recipient of the Yash Chopra memorial Award. Earlier recipients of this award were Amitabh Bachchan and Lata Mangeshkar. Rekha will be presented with this award on 2nd February, 2016 by the chief minister of Maharashtra.
The award was initiated by T Subbarami Reddy’s TSR foundation after the death of Yash Chopra in 2012. Rekha was chosen by jury members Hema Malini, Simi Garewal, Jaya Prada, Pam Chopra, Boney Kapoor and T. Reddy. Rekha will get a gold medal and 10 Lakh INR as the recipient.
The 61 year old actor was born Vanurekha Ganeshan in Chennai in 1954. Her father Gemini Ganeshan was a celebrated actor in the Tamil Film Industry. Rekha has worked in over 180 Bollywood movies till date. Her most popular movie is considered to be the 1981 movie ‘Umrao Jaan’. She worked with Yash Chopra in the 1981 movie ‘Silsila’ which is also considered as one of the most popular Bollywood movies of all time. Rekha was awarded the Padma Shri award in 2010.
