Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis continued their stellar run in 2016 by reaching the final of Sidney International 2016 and winning a record 29 consecutive matches on the way. In the semifinals Sania and Martina overcame the pair of Yaroslava Shvedova and Raluca Olaru in a closely fought match with the scores of 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Olaru and Shvedova broke Sania and Hingis 4 times to bag the first set but the Indo-Swiss pair came back strong to clinch the second set. The super tie-breaker was also proved to be exciting but Olaru and Shvedova made a costly double fault to hand the match over. If Mirza and Hingis can win the final, this will be their 11th WTA title together.
With the win over Olaru and Shvedova in semifinal, Hingis-Mirza have now broken the 1994 record of 28 consecutive wins set by Gigi Fernández and Natasha Zvereva. In the last week they had had surpassed the 25 consecutive wins of second place holders Roberta Vinci and Sara Irani. No doubt the pair is looking at a 2016 as successful as 2015 was for them, maybe even more.
